Abstract. The Shanghai Tenth People’s Hospital music therapy model comprises manifold music therapeutic techniques and elements from music-based curative practices. Research, which included a sample of 29 patients with complex psychiatric conditions, demonstrated significant pre-/post-treatment improvements (p ≤ 0.05) in all SCL-90 categories. Interdisciplinary analyses to identify therapeutic principles suggest (1) identity and reconciliation with the “self-in-context”, (2) psychosomatic relaxation and holistic equilibrium, (3) dynamic systemic synchronisation, (4) processing of unconscious material, (5) meditation and trance, (6) creative flow and symbolic expression, and (7) empathic interaction and inclusion awareness. The model is widely compatible with neuroscientific findings and Chinese philosophies of health.
